Founded in 1934 to "reduce injuries and
save lives by providing safety education and training," the
Safety Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, has been
actively involved in the development of driver training and
education courses, including those for
driving-under-the-influence (or DUI) programs for many
years.
The Safety Center has also
developed training programs for alcohol and other drug (AOD)
counselors, and offers those programs to other DUI providers
wishing to supplement or update their respective curriculum.

The DUI Curriculum materials, which the Safety Center has
developed in both English and Spanish, include step-by-step
instructions and guidelines for conducting classroom
education and group sessions. The course includes what the
counselor should do when, for example, conducting a first
education session ("State the class objective") and then
also provides what to do in order to achieve that objective:
"Say to the class, 'The goal is to educate you, the client,
about the physical and emotional consequences of drug and
alcohol use . . ..' " |

The DUI Program course
material, which includes the "DDP1: Alcohol and Drug Program
Participant Study Guide," includes recommendations for room
set up, how to establish the appropriate atmosphere for the
group session, how to inform participants of the group
objectives, as well as the expectations and responsibilities
of the members in the group.
And, the Safety Center also
offers a 26-minute "Alcohol and Nutrition" video,
which covers the effects of alcohol use by men and women,
the physiological consequences of abusive drinking, and
information about the abuse of prescription and
over-the-counter medications.

nutrition video was put together with the collaboration of
Charles H. Halsted, MD, Professor of Internal Medicine;
Chief, Division of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism; and
Director, Clinical Nutrition Research Unit, University of
California Davis Medical Center. |

"We
have been providing these services and developing these
programs for many years," explains
Luky Maldonado, Senior Vice President, Alcohol and Drug
Programs for the Safety Center, who also serves as Chair,
California Association of Drinking Driver Treatment Programs
(CADDTP). "And it is rewarding for us to be able to share
these programs and video with other agencies that are also
providing this information and education to individuals in
their respective DUI programs."
