Freedom from Suffering is a well-written and
easily-understood guide book to effectively deal with
chronic pain. As an individual with extensive clinical
experience, advanced academic studies on the topic, and one
who has personally dealt with chronic pain, Dr. Stephen
Grinstead is an excellent resource for counselors working
with chronic-pain clients, especially when those clients are
also battling alcohol or other drug addiction and trying to
manage pain without resorting to self-medication through
addictive substances.
Written in a conversational and informational format,
Freedom from Suffering starts with a section -
"Preparing for your Journey" - that prepares the reader for
the journey to address chronic pain management. It then
offers seven steps that have helped Dr. Grinstead and
thousands of patients in managing pain while improving the
quality of their lives.
The book
explores the nature of the chronic pain "beast," helps the
reader define and understand the pain system, discusses the
distinction between "pain" and "suffering," and helps the
reader develop a successful pain management plan.
This is an
excellent publication for addiction professionals, well
worth the investment of time to read and digest the
information provided, in order for the counselor to be aware
of the additional challenges faced by clients concurrently
battling both chronic pain and substance use disorders.
Dr. Grinstead, who graduated
with a Doctorate in Addictive Disorders (Dr.AD)
degree from Breining Institute (Class of 2002), presented his
Doctoral Dissertation on "Managing Pain and Coexisting
Addictive Disorders," and was subsequently published in the
Breining Institute Journal of Addictive
Disorders (see Grinstead, S.F. (2002). Managing
Pain Medication in Recovery: An examination of
addiction-free pain management, including effective
treatment for chronic pain and substance abuse disorders.
