Competencies

Intervention, Treatment and Recovery is truly a
"practical guide," as the title suggests, to understanding
the essential competencies identified within the seminal
"TAP 21" publication. The TAP 21, more formally known
as the Addiction Counseling Competencies: The Knowledge,
Skills, and Attitudes of Professional Practice,
Technical Assistance Publication (TAP) Series 21, first
published by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Services Administration (SAMHSA) in 1998 (and subsequently
updated and revised in 2006), is heavily relied upon by
professionals throughout the field, and identifies the
competencies that are essential to the effective practice of
counseling for psychoactive substance use disorders.
Spearheaded
by principal author Dr. Lori Phelps, Executive Director of
the California Association for Alcohol / Drug Educators (CAADE),
the list of contributing authors reads like a "Who's Who" of
academic and treatment professionals in the addiction field,
including:
-
Breining Institute visiting professor Gregory Granderson,
MS, CCS, president-elect of CAADE, recently retired Dean
of Students at Santa Rose Junior College, and past
president of the California Community College Academic
Senate; and
-
Subject Matter Expert (SME) Panel Member for the
Breining Institute addiction professional examinations,
Wayne Kistner, Esq., who also serves as General Counsel
for CAADE.
Exceptionally researched, with an abundance of relevant
citations to resource materials, this guide presents clearly
articulated overviews and explanations of each of the TAP 21
counselor competencies, and includes exercises, case studies
and additional resources that will be invaluable assistance
to the student studying to become a competent addiction
counselor.
We
especially liked the incorporation of the Quick Response (QR)
Codes, utilized throughout the publication, to quickly find
related reports, articles and videos, which allowed
instantaneous access to many additional resources available
through the Internet.
For
college programs just developing or updating course
materials for the study of addictive disorders / substance
use disorders, this publication is one that should
absolutely be considered as an important component of the
instruction materials.
Breining
Institute applauds Dr. Phelps, as well as each of the
contributing authors and the entire CAADE organization, for
putting together this relevant, informative and extremely
valuable resource to train individuals to become competent
addiction counselors.
